SAAM wants to expand and take parkland when there are alternatives…
There are alternative ways for Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park to expand without taking parkland from the historic Olmsted park. Many museums around the world are keeping the same footprint while expanding underground. We think this is also possible for SAAM.
Look through these examples and see what you think. Has SAAM really come up with the best design for everyone? We think not and would like to see them rethink their renovation and expansion, so they can achieve their expansion and not take away parkland. Beautifying and cleaning-up the East Wall would be a natural part of restoration and expansion underground within the footprint. See more examples and more about underground expansions here.
Expanding underground is more costly. An expert, structural engineer studied the situation with SAAM and thought the building cost may be comparable either way, especially considering “life cycle” costs such as utilities and exterior maintenance. Please read his insightful letter here.
See Architect Statement page to understand what some of the issues are regarding the current proposed design and possible alternatives SAAM has yet to explore. Also read the recent New York Times article claiming the future of museums is to stay in their footprint.
We are Seattle. We are progressive. We deserve better! Preserving open space by expanding underground is the future… Why underground is the way to go:
- Contextually respectful
- Integrate or merge architecture with landscape
- Energy efficient
- Preserves green space
Please look on the About SAAM Expansion page to see what is being proposed by SAM and then you decide if you think they should rethink their design! This will be the fifth expansion to the original building. If parkland is allowed to be taken now, when will it end? Read about the Privatization of Volunteer Park and if you would like to see them rethink, please go to our Action Center and write letters to officials and send them this link: ThinkAgainSAAM.org so they can see there are better design alternatives than what is being proposed.
